Does This Blog Make Me Look Fat?

I think I’m finally happy with my blog’s appearance, but before I finally commit to one design for a while, I’d love to hear what you think.

Do you find the site attractive? Cheerful? Easy to navigate?

Don’t worry about offending me.  Someday there’ll be editors and agents trolling these here waters. 🙂  I want to know that it doesn’t look like I pulled the site together in ten minutes.

Like these folks.

  1. Things I love: name, orange slice photo, background colors, author’s voice.

Things that are so perfect I don’t even think about them: the lineup at the right. Logical, clear, easy to navigate.

Things that occasionally confuse me: The photos. My first reaction is to think, “Is that Jan slugging caffeine? Is that Jan’s diapered darling? Is that Jan’s shower…”–wait, that last one was pretty clear.

Things I would change, based on personal prejudice: Use of the tilde, especially in the title of the post. Because typographical characters keep taking on new meanings (see # and @ as used in Twitter), there’s that split second where I think the tilde is supposed to be more than a decoration. I’m biased toward lean, clean and mean. ‘Cause that’s me, ya know.

    1. Ooh, good points, MJ. Thanks for that! I can fix the tilde — was trying to make one list item stand out from another, but obviously that’s not such a good idea — and label the photos.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Jewel, and for the feedback! Yeah, I’m not nuts about the pop-up feature myself but thought others might appreciate it. Think I’ll see if I can turn it off. See you around AW. 🙂

  2. It is divine! I loved the orange slice all along, but I really like the background stripes. How did you figure out how to do all this stuff? I had to hire someone to do mine.

  3. Your blog is gorgeous. I love all the colors. Did you use a CSS upgrade for this or just basic?

You are very talented and creative. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, John! My writing projects are veeery long, so immediate feedback is a rare and precious thing. I appreciate the time you took to come here and commit to a position. 🙂

Yes, I did the CSS upgrade. I knew absolutely nothing about CSS when I started two months ago and little about the sites where I could get copywrite-free images and backgrounds. But it helps to have OCD, lol. I pick away at it bit by bit.

Absolutely everything you see here was free – after the CSS upgrade, that is.
