How Do You Measure a Writing Year?

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how I’ll define success in writing, especially since there are so few short-term external rewards. And I love the song “Seasons of Love” from the movie Rent. With apologies to the original composer, I’ve bastardized the lyrics for a bit of fun. If you’re not familiar with the melody, or just want to listen to it as you try the words out, the video is embedded below.

Seasons Of Love lyrics

Songwriters: Larson, Jonathan D

COMPANY
525,600 minutes, 525,600 moments so dear.
525,600 minutes – how do you measure a writing year?
In pages, in blog posts, in RITA’s, in cups of coffee.
In goosebumps, in tears, in butt width, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes – how do you measure a year of writing life?
How about love? How about love? How
about love? Measure in love.
Seasons of love.

SOLOISTS 1&2
525,600 minutes! 525,000 journeys to plan.
525,600 minutes – how can you measure the life of writing woman or man?

SOLOIST 1
In agents she spurned,

SOLOIST 2
Or in readers who cried.

SOLOIST 1
In hours he yearned,

SOLOIST 2
For protagonists who died….

COMPANY
It’s time now to sing out,
the story never ends,
Let’s celebrate remember a year in the life of writing friends.
How about love!
How about love! How about love!
Measure in love.
Seasons of love! Seasons of love.
