I always wondered about the pronunciation until I heard Mr. Wonderful say it himself, when he reads an excerpt from a Georgette Heyer novel. He uses the first pronunciation, although it’s probably easier to rhyme things with the second one. BUT, you managed to solve the conundrum quite handily!
