Welcome and a Brief Introduction

Jan O'Hara, writerOnce upon a time, I had the great honor of working as a family doctor. As you might imagine, the experience changed me forever.

I learned how to become an emotional chameleon. In one exam room I might be called upon to deliver bad news, in the next, to coo over a fat, thriving baby. Both deserved a doctor who was fully present and genuine.

I learned healthcare wasn’t a one-sided, top-down power structure. For example, my son was named after a bright, precocious little boy in my practice. A patient fell in love with my daughter’s name and claimed it for her own child.

So fair warning, Dear Reader: If you decide to hang around these parts, you’ll notice an ongoing obsession with themes of hope and healing, and a tone that ranges from the heartfelt to the absurd.

In many ways, I’ve left the practice of medicine behind, but that world hasn’t quite abandoned me.

Warmly,
